Latvian Autism Association
Latvian Autism Association (in Latvian – Latvijas Autisma apvienība, in short – LAA) was established in 2006.
The Association’s primary objectives are to advocate for the rights and interests of autistic individuals and their families, as well as to enhance the quality of life for those on the autism spectrum. It is a voluntary, non-governmental organisation that provides a platform for autistic people and their families to support one another, learn, and share experiences and advice related to autism.
In 2011, the Association was granted Public Benefit Status in Latvia in two categories – Protection of Human Rights and Individual Rights and Civil Society Development.
Since 2013, the Association is a member of Autism-Europe (www.autismeurope.org). LAA also partakes in international activities such as Erasmus+ projects, collaborating with diverse professionals and organisations across Europe.
Since 2024, LAA has been running a structured peer support project, “Atbalstīt Ceļā”, which provides systematic psychosocial and informational support for families with autistic children. While the primary focus is on supporting autistic people, family members often face significant challenges, too. The complex administrative procedures, lengthy queues and negative attitudes can have a detrimental impact on the physical and psychological well-being of all parties involved. Supporting family members of autistic people is essential to prevent burnout, improve their quality of life and facilitate their return to the labour market for professional fulfilment.
Advocacy for the rights of autistic people and their families provides a valuable opportunity to influence change, to have a voice at the decision-making table, and to contribute experience-based insights.
